@alexnds1 think of it this way they want the dog to attack a criminal in some situations but not in others....like if the criminal is surrendering and is in the dogs face he needs to be trained to stop on? command...even if he was just told to attack...

That worked for my lab/cattle dog mix. Will not work for the pure breed bluey. He runs after the ball then lays down? where it lands so that I have to walk out to him. He used to retrieve perfectly but now he is determined to train me to go to where he decides to put the ball. He is driving my husband and I crazy.

my dog has major confidence issues, he needs loads of encouragement and seems to be afraid of toys I hope that we can work on this at the park today:) I know I? may not be able to get him to fetch but just showing interest in the ball would be a milestone, maybe he will pick it up in his mouth! My dog is a german sheprard/retirver mix. Fetching/retreiver should be breed into her. Shes an older dog, but whenver I how a ball her ears perk up and ill toss it, shell start going after it like she wants to play, then shell just stop like shes embarassed or something and wont touch it again. What should i do? I adopted her from the OSPCA so is it possible a previous family just didnt teach her properly? I mean, she does go after it but? then shell just stop and lay down. Help? D:

You guys do an awesome job with the Sit Means Sit techniques. In my experience, people have gotten really freaked out about remote collar training, but I have found that the impersonal nature and consistency of the stimulus creates an awesome combination for training facilitation, when used CORRECTLY. I have a malinois/pit mix as well, and the remote training really gave us the leverage to make sure he will stay consistent and attentive.? Awesome job! Keep it up!

Depending on what you count as a command, I'd say mine knows about 9ish? Basics, sit stay down up come. Speak gets a loud bark, "say please" gets a throaty grumble or a whine depending. She waits to get her food or to come in the house? from outside until told, so maybe those are commands, or just good manners? Never have been able to teach roll over, I was shown the "push" assisted teaching by a friend, but that works much easier I think if the dog is not 90+ lbs like mine! And she hated it.

@kordugum4 Sounds great! Be patient, practice often. Back up to an easier step when you need to. Good luck! (and speaking from personal experience, if you? don't like the trainer you get, or don't agree with the way the person teaches - don't be afraid to leave the class and find another!)

my dog has the same problem. we have a really hard time getting her out and once out, she's scared of everything. this has been going on for months and getting worse. we take her out for a? walk every day and try to desensitize her. even if she warms up to being out that day, the next day is just as bad as it was before. getting really worried. we've tried lots of positive reinforcement, treats, etc. nothing works. we've had her since she was a baby - she's now almost two. help?

?? are you a trainer? i think he actually did a pretty good job..this guy is makign progress..i mean the dog is already labeled as a fearful dog...just? because the dog is making advancements doesnt mean the tail is automatically going to go up (its a fearful dog..it takes time)...fearful dogs probably take longer to remold and work with than any other dog problem. I find it faster to train a super aggressive dog than a fearful one...this sho

@itzamariecole mines 11 months and 110. you should have and should still be walking him every day. theres no leash law where i live and mine hasnt been on a? leash since he was 6 months its all about positive reinforcement. if you have to, start in your back yard or some where fenced in so you know he wont be able to run off. then dont discipline him for doing bad things but reward him when he does what you want. it wont take long before you notice a difference.

@itzamariecole ok. I love rotties. The more u don't take him out, the more hyper he is. I would? reccomend using a Gentel leader or prongcollar. I use both for my dog. Works gr8. Another thing, when he pulls, stop walking until he stops, looks at u and there is slack in the leash. Plz reply if this is helpful. oh, and u can talk 2 ur local shelter about what they think would be the best training tool 4 ur dog. hope this is helpful!

@aeilenor Exactly. I think for the tougher cases standing still works better than going the other way. You want to reward a loose? leash, but if you have a puller and you start pulling in the other direction you'll never get a loose leash to reward.

@Thewaterofthepool For starters get a harness that doesn't choke. I use both an Easy Walker and a collar, and attach the leash to both D-rings. That prevents neck injuries. Refuse to pull or be pulled, absolutely, all the time, no exceptions. Turn around and go the other way, or stop and "become a tree." The instant the leash is loose, mark the glorious event with a click or attaboy, and follow up with a? treat dropped BY YOUR SIDE. This video shows how: /watch?v=sFgtqgiAKoQ

You need to put your dog in a controlled, calm environment to give him a chance to succeed. Alot of owners,? who don't have leash-trained dogs, throw their dogs into the big world (full of stimulus and excitement) and expect them to know how to cope. Try walking your dog inside the home, and praising him for not tugging on the leash. When he's confortable and confident with that, move it to the backyard. One step at a time, set your dog up for success!

I made the ball bounce less and less until she got to the point where she would just pick it up straight off the ground. Once she got the idea that all she had to do was? take the ball in her mouth no matter what, I started actually throwing it. When she caught it, I started praising her before she spat it out, and thzen showered her with treats. Then I began throwing non food items more often and treats less often, praising her and giving her treats every time she caught? one of the toys. So she learned that catching the toys was a good thing. Eventually I got to the point where I could just throw a ball at her and she would catch it, even if she knew it wasn´t a treat.

@drumcafe8 You actually care? Explaining it is going to take long though... Well, I started throwing treats at her, saying "catch" every time I threw it. If she caught it, she got to eat it, if she didn´t, I quickly picked it? up again before she could. Eventually, once she started opening her mouth just because I said "catch" even if I hadn´t thrown the treat yet. Then I started mixing in non food items, and since she wasn´t even looking what it was, she caught those too.

@klevadawgz no, its not an accident waiting to happen. Building drive in a dog does not equate to creating an out of control dog. Games like this teach the dog how to listen even when highly aroused and excited. Which is actually safer for a dog who's going to spend any amount of time around kids. I have kids, I have four dogs. We build drive AND we install an? on/off switch :)

@ahoedel Depending on your dog, have some version of a "PARTY!" with the toy -within earshot of your dog. ? They will become intersted in anything you place high value on like that. Then play with them and the toy (any toy, heck a sock or a carboard box would work, too). Your dog has never played with toys before? Fill a pencil case with their breakfast, attach it to a leash, let them see what's inside and then start moving it around a bit so the kibble starts to come out. Have fun!

What a shame people have to try to make themselves look clever by picking apart a video that demonstrates a fun way to achieve great drive and control through play. It's very clear the dog? understands the game - look at how quickly he backs off the toy when the cue to take it isn't given - fabulous. I love playing with my dogs this way, you get wonderful drive and with that drive comes the motivation to perform enthusiastically. Maybe not for the inexperienced but I love it!! :)

Very good point you are making here, Susan. I went to a seminar given by a behaviorist where we were shown a video clip of a golden retriever puppy who was a resource guarder. The owner was given some? very bad advice by a very bad trainer, telling her to force the puppy to give up whatever he was guarding, by putting her knee on the puppy's back and not giving up on the object until the puppy let go. At the age of 6 months, this puppy was put down, because he became very aggressive.

@klevadawgz while I respect your right to have your opinion, I use this very technique for building drive in flyball dogs. And what I think you miss is that we only play like this with one object. The TUG! My dogs know what a TUG is and what is NOT a? TUG. They are not idiots, they know when we are playing, and when we are not playing. I have 9 dogs who all live in the house uncrated together (I have some very high drive dogs when it comes to play), yet I have no issues like you suggest

I wouldnt include this in my training as I do not want my dogs reinforced for displaying this type of behaviour, it goes directly against my cues to keep them on the ground near people with wavy things in the air (so they dont snatch stuff and knock kids over) :) Having recently taken my puppy to "puppy classes" (which were great) the amount of times the others ignored? the trainer saying "dont say no no no" is crazy!

I've always understood "Drive" is how likely a dog is to show instinctual behaviours - this video seems to illustrate? that if you raise your voice and dance about you incite your dog to 'shout' back again and because the jumping/barking is reinforced by attention from you and a moving toy its likely this will generalise eventually to all toys and is an accident waiting to happen if you have young kids about? Surely what you should do to increase drive is increase the dogs confidence ...

Golly, I didn't think she was implying that tons of professional dog trainers (and who said anything about Schutzhund??) are out there? doing this. From my years of reading/observing Susan, she uses "trainer" to mean anyone handling or interacting with a dog (as is the case for all of us who have dogs). You have a dog, you interact with it, you're a trainer. We've all seen someone do this, sometime. We all seem to agree this behavior is "bad" training... why the fuss?

training your dog is easy aslong as you are willing to put the time and effort in.use short 1 word commands and focus on one trick such as sit untill your dog has it locked you will confuse it if your giving it a list of things to do while? it is still learning.also it is as much about training yourself as training your dog so keep that in mind :)

@Hrvatica918 I would just introduce the two animals to each other, see how they react. They could hit it off, and they could detest each other. If your cat can't get along with the puppy, then don't take the puppy,? or take a puppy that your cat will get along with. Declawing her is inhumane. Cats use their nails for various things (to climb for example) and it's not the cat's fault if she doesn't like the puppy. Not all dogs like each other either, same goes for cats.

@iiRyAnJ I agree that they attract bad people, but there are people, like myself,? who love these dogs and who know how to raise them well. Amstaffs are not the same breed as the American Pit Bull terrier. They're cousins but share a lot of similarities in appearance, characteristics to be put under the term 'pit bull'. I prefer to call my dog an Amstaff though, and not a pit bull.

@VEGAZme Some people train their Amstaffs for shows or something,? so they bulk up their dogs by letting them pull heavy stuff so the chest muscles develop even more. Most Amsaffs are 'thin' when you don't do all the weight pulling and so forth.

My Amstaff is so excitable and energetic. I love that about him, but it can be difficult sometimes around other dogs and especially around other dog owners. My dog always wants to investigate another dog and play with them, but a lot of dog owners are apparently afraid that my dog's going to eat their ankle biters. I trust him around big dogs, like German Shepherds, Rottweilers,? Dobermann's, Labs, Golden retrievers and so forth, but small dogs, not so much.

Yo i got an amstaff/rottweiler and shes nearly 7 month, i trained her to sit, lay play dead and lots of stuff on command, however, she refuses to coop with me when we're walking with leash. Swear to god i tried everything but it wont just do. Was wondering if you got any pointers ??

Lets say for example..animal welfare come knocking on your door and ask to look inside your house cause you got a dog, then they say it's not appropriate condition for such an animal to live in.
